Expanding Climate Action
Since joining the United Nations Global Compact in 2017 DEWA has pioneered initiatives that curb climate change. A flagship example is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park the world’s largest single site solar project operating under the Independent Power Producer model. Scheduled to reach five thousand megawatts by 2030 the park will cut carbon emissions by more than six point five million tonnes each year and advances the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy which targets a seventy five percent share of clean energy by 2050.
DEWA’s efforts already produced remarkable results. In 2019 Dubai’s net carbon emissions dropped by twenty two percent surpassing the Carbon Abatement Strategy goal two years ahead of its deadline.
Transparent Reporting and Cultural Excellence
DEWA releases a comprehensive annual Sustainability Report highlighting progress toward the UAE Centennial vision of becoming the world’s leading nation by 2071. In 2020 DEWA scored ninety one point two percent on the Sustainability Culture Indicator significantly above the global average thanks to strong leadership innovation and extensive awareness programmes.
Responsible Production and Resource Management
Beyond solar energy DEWA is constructing a two hundred fifty megawatt hydroelectric station in Hatta the first in the Arabian Gulf. With a storage capacity of one thousand five hundred megawatt hours and a planned lifespan of eighty years this AED one point four two one billion project will diversify the energy mix.
DEWA’s partnership with Expo Twenty Twenty Dubai and Siemens has produced the region’s first industrial scale green hydrogen project further demonstrating the authority’s commitment to clean technologies.
Through the Shams Dubai initiative building owners install photovoltaic panels and connect them to the grid. More than six thousand seven hundred connections already deliver two hundred ninety five megawatts across residential commercial and industrial sites. These successes complement DEWA’s extensive conservation campaigns such as Smart Living Green Week Earth Hour and Let’s Make This Summer Green. From 2009 to 2020 these efforts saved two point six terawatt hours of electricity eight point five billion gallons of water and prevented one point three two one million tonnes of carbon emissions equal to AED one point five billion in value.
Delivering Affordable and Clean Energy
By boosting solar production DEWA has lowered the fuel surcharge from six point five fils to five fils per kilowatt hour for electricity and from zero point six fils to zero point four fils per imperial gallon for water. Savings from reduced fuel consumption are passed directly to consumers reinforcing DEWA’s role in providing affordable energy.
Investing in Quality Education
