The United Arab Emirates has revealed an updated climate roadmap that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by forty seven percent from 2019 levels by 2035. The pledge comes just days before the COP29 United Nations Climate Summit in Azerbaijan.
As one of the world’s largest oil producing nations the UAE’s new Nationally Determined Contributions place it in the spotlight of global climate action. These contributions outline each country’s plan to meet the Paris Agreement goals which include keeping global temperature rise below one point five degrees Celsius and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Why this matters
The announcement shows growing momentum among major economies to take clear responsibility for environmental impact. After hosting COP28 in Dubai last year the UAE is the first significant emitter to submit an enhanced target well before the 2025 deadline. The new goal builds on the earlier promise of a forty percent cut by 2030.
Strategic energy shift
The UAE is broadening its energy mix. In addition to rapid solar expansion and investment in waste to energy technology the country is advancing its civil nuclear program. Yet the path forward remains complex. Emission goals rise even as oil and gas production is set to increase through the end of the decade.
Environmental groups question whether such dual tracks can coexist. Recent analysis shows the UAE together with upcoming COP hosts Azerbaijan and Brazil is projected to raise combined oil and gas output by thirty two percent by 2035.
Global reactions
Climate advocates argue that exported emissions must be part of the equation. Andreas Sieber of the organisation 350 dot org notes that most UAE produced oil is burned outside the country which clouds the real climate impact.
